Deux CD qui nous présentent le génie de ce guitariste d'exception. Guitariste de Captain Beefheart jusqu'en 1980, il entame une carrière solo, fonde le groupe Gods & Monsters. Il a multiplié les collaborations avec Lou Reed, John Cale, Nick Cave, Alan Vega, Peter Hammill, Leonard Bernstein, Kevin Coyne, John Zorn, Chris Cornel. Il soutient et encourage Jeff Buckley dans ses efforts.
Le premier CD contient des titres de son groupe Gods & Monsters. Ils sont principalement issus des albums "The Ordeal Of Civility" et "Coming Clean". On y découvre ses réels talents de compositeur, alliés à sa maîtrise parfaite des ses instruments. La démo de "Grace" nous ravira, et nous permet d'entendre la voix de Jeff Buckley.
Le deuxième CD présente des morceaux solo et quelques inédits. Il débute par une reprise de "All along the watchtower" de Bob Dylan chanté par Feifei Yang. Mais elle n'est pas la seule invitée à prêter sa voix sur ce disque. Haydee et Suylen Milanes, et Los Van Van participent à "Out From Under", Nona Hendryx sur "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Eyes".
Ce panorama non exhaustif est une belle réussite et donne une vision très large du talent de ce guitar-hero.
